Metagenomic analysis of the anophthalmic socket eye: contralateral eye study

By Dr. Carlos Rocha de Lossada / MD PhD

Project aim

There is an increasing interest in the role of conjunctival microbiome in the healthy ocular surface and in different ocular diseases. There is also enough evidence that dysregulation of resident microbial communities (dysbiosis) might be associated with disconfort sensation In patients with anophthalmic socket. Our purpose is to investigate the differences In the microbiome between the healthy and anophthalmic eye, and to relate them to questionnaires on ocular discomfort.

Execution

To investigate the anophthalmic socket associated ocular microbiome, we will apply 16S and ITS2 amplicon sequencing in conjunctival swabs obtained from 50 patients and we will compare the results to our matched healthy controls (LUCY).
Written informed consent was obtained from all parents/subjects enrolled.
